![]() | Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Buy used from: $7.48 The undeniable king of all miniseries. You don't ever want this one to end. Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy...outstanding perfomances by Alison Steadman as Mrs. Bennet and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet.

![]() | The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.99 My favorite movie of all time. Fantastic music, gripping action, and a range of emotions all filmed against a beautiful North Carolina background. Daniel Day-Lewis (the amazing Hawkeye) and Steven Waddington (the ultimately honorable Duncan) are the standouts.

![]() | Wives and Daughters
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $14.99 I love, love, love this BBC miniseries based on Elizabeth Gaskell's work. You are hard pressed to find somebody you don't like at least a little. Even the selfish Cynthia (Keeley Hawes) is absolutely likeable. My personal favorites in this are Michael Gambon as the devoted Squire Hamley and the sweet Hamley brothers (Tom Hollander and Anthony Howell).

![]() | Lorna Doone
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $6.17 R.D. Blackmore's great story about a young girl with a secret noble past and the farm boy who falls for her. Although Lorna (Amelia Warner) is about as animated as a piece of cardboard, farmer John Ridd (Richard Coyle) more than makes up for her lack of emotion.

![]() | Ethan Frome
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.41 Liam Neeson is the tragic Ethan Frome, who is in a loveless marriage to Zeena (Joan Allen) and instead loves her cousin Mattie (Patricia Arquette). Set in a stark, wintry New England town in the 1800's, this movie will make you feel both the bleakness of the neverending cold and the warmth of emotion.
|
![]() | The Mayor of Casterbridge
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $4.96 I absolutely love this story. It is unhappy from the beginning until the end. The amazing Ciaran Hinds plays Michael Henchard, a man whose terrible choices in life are fueled by jealousy and selfishness. Still, you feel sympathy and anguish for this man throughout the entire story. Jodhi May as poor Elizabeth Jane is wonderful.

![]() | Cranford
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.00 A really sweet set of stories all woven together make up Cranford, a town where everybody knows everybody else's business. Very quaint and slightly quirky with a perfect ending. Judi Dench as Miss Matty and Alex Etel as Harry are my favorites.
|
![]() | Persuasion
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.38 Not as showy as some other Jane Austin flicks, this is the love story of Anne Elliot (Amanda Root) and Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds). The broken-hearted interaction between Anne and Wentworth will leave you breathless.
|
![]() | The Buccaneers
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.89 The story of ambitious American girls and land-rich, cash-poor Englishmen. Moral of the story: you really ought to think hard about your choice of spouse. My favorites were Nan (Carla Gugino) and Miss Testvalley (Cherie Lunghi).
|
![]() | Bleak House
Buy new: $33.49 / Used from: $17.94 A Charles Dickens soap opera with some crazy camera effects. Rather tragic in many areas, but it does have a pretty happy ending. There are a couple of really hateful characters, but I couldn't get enough of the sweet John Jarndyce (Denis Lawson - Wedge from Star Wars!) and the hilarious Mr. Guppy (Burn Gorman).
|
![]() | Daniel Deronda
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.41 Fantastic story of a young man seeking out his purpose in life and the characters he meets along the way. Hugh Dancy is the kind-hearted and sometimes confused Daniel, who captures the attentions of the selfish Gwendolyn Harleth (Romola Garai). Hugh Bonneville as the horrible Henleigh Grandcourt is the standout here.
|
![]() | Wuthering Heights (1992)
Buy used from: $7.99 Ah, that headstrong Cathy and that crazy (literally) Heathcliff...a lot of people don't like this version of the story, but I prefer it to the later Masterpiece theatre version. Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff is so insane that it's completely fascinating to watch.
|
![]() | Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $3.08 I completely love this movie. Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon is adorable.
|
![]() | Clarissa
Buy new: $37.49 / Used from: $17.90 Clarissa is the miserable story of a virtuous young woman whose life is made unbearable when she becomes the object of lust for a well-known rake, Mr. Lovelace (Sean Bean). As he does everything in his power to try to conquer her will, he finds that her steadfast character has produced in him a genuine love for her. Be forewarned: there is a very disturbing rape scene in the movie.
|
![]() | Amadeus - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $7.99 This movie is one of the greatest ever. Fascinating on so many levels. Tom Hulce as the boyish, profane genius Mozart and F. Murray Abraham as his rival Salieri are both amazing.
|
![]() | Under the Biltmore Clock
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.20 This is a charming tale of a Jazz Era girl and her search for a husband. Sean Young is wonderful as Myra Harper in this wonderful adaptation of a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
|
![]() | Miss Potter
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.47 This is quite simply one of the sweetest movies I have ever seen. Absolutely lovely!
