The Films I've Seen In 2008 Part 1 (From Best To Worst)
By an Amazon.com customer
Rachel Getting MarriedRachel Getting Married
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $0.99
***** Jonathan Demme's film takes us to places both emotionally devastating and magically human. Hand-held cameras brilliantly capture every joyous and heart-breaking moment. There is not a single bad performance in the film, but Anne Hathaway is genius and will touch you. Sharply observant and deeply human, this truly deserves the label of "masterpiece." The best film of 2008
Slumdog MillionaireSlumdog Millionaire
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $2.58
***** Danny Boyle's breathless, brilliant film is nothing short of magical. Set against a vivid India, it features witty dialogue, memorable cinematography, and heartfelt performances. It's a tragic-comic thrill ride, an emotional rollercoaster, a tale that embraces an old Indian theme--fate. And fate has it that this masterpiece is one of the great films of 2008
MilkMilk
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $0.01
***** Gus Van Sant's superb bio-film of Harvey Milk is one of 2008's best. Sean Penn gives a remarkable performance, one that may win him another Oscar. The script is efficient and economical, the great cast features Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna. Van Sant never strays from the facts, and makes this an entertaining, moving, and inspiring history and civics lesson
In BrugesIn Bruges
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.78
***** Dark, hilarious, and touching, this feature debut from playwright Martin McDonagh proves he has a career in film. Here he gives us a gripping dramedy, with deliciously witty dialogue, human characters, and three great performances at the center of it. Everything builds to a satisfying, brutally apposite climax where nothing feels forced. One of the great films of 2008
The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.70
***** The movie event of the summer. Director/co-wriiter Christopher Nolan has crafted an ambitious, arty piece of pop entertainment. It's also a gripping crime epic. The cast is an embarrassment of acting riches, with the late Heath Ledger in particular seriously meriting an Oscar nomination for his vivid, sadistic, and definitive version of the iconic Joker. A superb achievement
Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)Wall-E (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $12.73
***** Another Pixar classic. They've gotten their magic back with their best film since 'Finding Nemo.' Writer/director Andrew Stanton crafts a truly great film that plays on sci-fi movie conventions while also making a terrific, heartfelt entertainment for all ages. The story is genius and it isn't preachy. The love story is adorably funny and heart-warming. Just lovely
The VisitorThe Visitor
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
***** Richard Jenkins delivers one of the best performances of 2008, bringing authority and compassion to a charcter like only an experienced pro can. It's something of a career-defining performance. That the film surrounding Jenkins lives up to him is a testament to writer/director Tom McCarthy's human and politically relevant script. This is the year's most heart-warming film
Kung Fu Panda (Widescreen Edition)Kung Fu Panda (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.00
***** The most fun I've had at the movies all summer. Utterly gorgeous animation, great voice work by the all-star cast, exciting action sequences, and an inspiring story all combine to make a perfect family film for all ages. The film also has a blast toying with martial-arts-movie conventions. It's heartfelt, often hilarious, and, from start to finish, always fun
The DuchessThe Duchess
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.80
**** A beautifully crafted period piece. Kiera Knightley continues to mature as a woman and an actress. Supermodel looks aside, this lady can act. And she's not alone. Ralph Fiennes is also perfect. Saul Dibb's gorgeously mounted and detailed film doesn't search for deeper meaning in Georgiana's life, but as a lush and lavish period piece, this film is superb
W. (Widescreen)W. (Widescreen)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $0.01
**** George Bush gets his own bio-film with this superb comic-drama. Many a scene feels authentic in tone, since by now we're so familiar with these people and this history. Josh Brolin is uncanny as Bush, pushing past the media caricature that has long defined him. The supporting cast is flawless. It doesn't quite rank with Stone's other classics, but this is simply fascinating
ReligulousReligulous
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.75
**** Bill Maher's fearless and provocative documentary. He takes aim at religion, asking questions, probing their tenants. He mocks, is prone to interuptions, and he can be rude. But he's attempting to get at those who use religion to justify intolerance. Maher pleas with fellow rationalists to make their argument heard or they will be enablers. Truly fascinating stuff
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $4.36
**** Over-familiar and a bit schmaltzy at times, but director David Fincher brings the Fitzgerald short story to vivid life. Brad Pitt is a sturdy presence at the center of this with three great female performances surrounding him. It's all gorgeously shot with amazing visual effects and dreamy, under-lit photography. Consistently enjoyable, pretty much from start to finish
Revolutionary RoadRevolutionary Road
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.71
**** Sam 'American Beauty' Mendes goes for the 'burbs again with this 1950s period drama. Heart-breaking and perfectly cast, it has a 'Mad Men' milieu that looks gorgeous. Kate Winslet is devastating and Leo DiCaprio is only good. Kathy Bates and Michael Shannon are superb. Mendes' thought-provoking if timeworn tale pulls us in and takes us to some disturbing places
Frost/NixonFrost/Nixon
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.48
**** This somewhat fictionalized docudrama is enertaining and witty. Ron Howard's film, with a Peter Morgan script (adapted from his play), shows us these men engaged in a historic dance of wills and wits. The genius of the performances by Michael Sheen and Frank Langella is that neither of them devolve into caricature. It's not a knockout, but the film does flirt with the greatness
Seven PoundsSeven Pounds
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.02
**** Will Smith gives an Oscar-caliber performance in his best film in years. Director Gabriele Muccino delivers a weeper, a cryptic mystery, and a winning romance with a righteous message. Smith has a good supporting cast with Rosario Dawson, in particular, all but stealing the movie from him. It's not perfect but this is one tear-jerker that genuinely earns those tears
The WrestlerThe Wrestler
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.24
**** Darren Aronofsky's naturalistic drama seems built around Mickey Rourke's persona and physicallity. This may be the performance of his career. Marisa Tomei is funny, vulnerable, and magnificent, and Evan Rachel Wood is devastating. The behind-the-scenes look at WWE-style wrestling is fascinating. It has its predictable stretches, but this is a wrenching, and gripping film
DoubtDoubt
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.78
**** Thought-provoking and often gripping, this unsettling drama gets by on excellent writing and powerful performances. John Patrick Shanley adapts his own play deftly. The perfect cast features Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis. The resoltution lacks dramatic thunderclap resonance but this film keeps you pinned to your seat
Frozen RiverFrozen River
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $1.76
**** Courtney Hunt's harrowing and moving indie drama is superb. Melissa Leo never missteps in the lead, effortlessly pulling us in to her character's plight. Same goes for Misty Upham. Both perfectly embody people leading "lives of quiet desperation." Hunt's script creates genuine pathos for her characters. It's not a masterpiece, but Hunt and Leo allow this tale to flirt with greatness
The ReaderThe Reader
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.38
**** Director Stephen Daldry and writer David Hare bring Bernhard Schlink's novel to poetic life. The film is deliberate and emotionally distant. That only serves to highlight the subtext about generational understanding and guilt. Ralph Fiennes is perfect, and Kate Winslet may win an Oscar. Some may find it unsatisfying, but this is a thought-provoking and emotionally understated film
Happy-Go-LuckyHappy-Go-Lucky
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $1.75
**** A wonderful triumph from Mike Leigh. This comedy has some big laughs and moments of painful truth. Leigh's improv style has it's good and bad. Some of the dialogue, if clever, feels a little polished. Then heartfelt moments of human interaction show the beauty of letting the actors find their own rhythm. Sally Hawkins is simply luminous and Eddie Marsan is her grumpy equal
City of MenCity of Men
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.48
**** Based on a TV show that was a spin-off of the 2002 film 'City of God,' this film has a story all its own and a different feel to it. It's not the great flashy epic that was 'God.' What plays out here is more melodrama, but the filmmakers keep the same gritty style of 'God' while providing more hope. A terrific, moving second look at the ever-fascinating world of the slums of Rio de Janeiro
Be Kind RewindBe Kind Rewind
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
**** This is a movie lover's movie, pure and simple. I all but loved this movie. It put a smile on my face the whole time and it has some good laughs. The nostalgic sentimentality, while warm and charming, does become a bit sticky towards the end. But Jack Black and Mos Def bring the funny and there's a fun, breezy tone that rarely falters. A 100-minute funny slice of heaven
Lakeview TerraceLakeview Terrace
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.36
**** This slow-burn thriller builds racially-charged tension realistically with a solid cast and director to class up what could have been conventional. Sam is perfect, and Kerry Washington and Patrick Wilson make us care about this couple's frightening dilemma. Director Neil Labute handles the escalating drama with verve. It may be a letdown in the last 10-15 minutes but until then it’s gripping
Tropic Thunder (Unrated Director's Cut)Tropic Thunder (Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $2.15
**** Ben Stiller's outrageous satire of everything movies and Hollywood is an action-comedy epic of hilarious comic proportions. It's a movie-lover's comedy, and it’s uproarious. The entire cast, from big stars to supporting roles and cameos, is a riot. The film drags at times, but by its action-and-laugh-packed finale it'll have you rolling on the floor
Pineapple Express (Two-Disc Unrated Edition + Digital Copy)Pineapple Express (Two-Disc Unrated Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $4.20
**** Pot-fueled fun from beginning to end. Sure it's irresponsible, but indie director David Gordon Green proves he can handle mainstream fare. The cinematography and editing give the narrative structure of this Pulp Fiction-on-weed a smooth flow. The actors--Seth Rogen, James Franco, Gary Cole, Rosie Perez, Bill Hader, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride--are all hilarious. A classic stoner comedy
Iron Man (Ultimate 2 Disc Edition)Iron Man (Ultimate 2 Disc Edition)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $8.70
**** The first popcorn movie of summer 2008--and it's terrifically entertaining. Robert Downey Jr. is perfectly cast and he has a stellar supporting cast--Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges--to help him, and director Jon Favreau keeps things light, brisk, and fun. Sure it doesn't rank with the best superhero movies, but enjoy this cool summer ride at the movies--it's a blast!
The Boy in the Striped PajamasThe Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.97
**** Mark Herman's compact and heart-breaking film is authentically human, if a tiny bit emotionally manipulative. Asa Butterfield has the right blend of wonder, cleverness, and innocence. Vera Farmiga is stunning, letting us see the gears turn in her eyes. It's not great, but this emotional drama will take you on a wrenching journey into history's worst genocide from a new perspective
The Bank Job (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)The Bank Job (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.37
**** Based on true events, this British heist flick is slick and highly entertaining. Jason Statham gives a lean performance and the cast is made up of good British character actors. Director Roger Donaldson takes a while to set up the story and get us involved, but before long we're hooked. There's great 70s British slang throughout and the period is captured nicely. A fun and cool movie
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Two-Disc Special Edition)Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $3.23
**** This revival of the iconic 1980s trilogy is a spectacular romp. Harrison Ford is almost the loveable rogue he once was. Shia LaBeouf and Karen Allen have easy chemistry with him. The middle drags a bit, but the chases and brawls are as fun as ever. Sure, it's not as good or fun as any of the originals, but for what it is--a good old-fashioned Indiana Jones movie--it delivers the goods
Vantage Point (Two-Disc Special Edition)Vantage Point (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.35
**** An efficient, exciting, and thoroughly entertaining popcorn thriller that gets the job done, and then some. An able ensemble fill all their roles well. It's a puzzle whose pieces fit just right, ratcheting up the tension right up until the end. Sure it's nothing deep and probably too convoluted for its own good, but this breathless thrill ride still delivers
Quantum of Solace (Two-Disc Special Edition)Quantum of Solace (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $5.15
**** This fierce new Bond film is a more straight-forward actioner than its superior predecessor. Daniel Craig is still the best actor to play Bond and really sells the action. Director Marc Forster gives this a frenetic pace, and Mathieu Amalric makes for a hiss-able villain. Bond may not inspire sympathy in this outing but Craig continues to make him more compelling than he's been in ages
Valkyrie (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)Valkyrie (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $6.25
**** A solid, absorbing, and well-mounted thriller. Tom Cruise gives a bowstring-tight performance and leads us through this fascinating story. The supporting cast is solid across the board. Singer handles the ticking-clock urgency and moments of suspense with aplomb. It's built mainly to thrill but Cruise and Singer shed light and ennoble a forgotten part of history
TranssiberianTranssiberian by Woody Harrelson
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.01
**** A solid thriller in the best Hitchcockian tradition. Director/co-writer Brad Anderson thoroughly keeps us engrossed and on the edge of our seat for most of the time. Emily Mortimer is very good, Woody Harrelson shows why he deserves better work, and Ben Kingsley is superb as always. It isn't the most surprising thriller, but Anderson and his cast keep the tension on high
Burn After ReadingBurn After Reading
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.19
**** The Coen Brothers are back with this funny screwball farce. It has many Coens-comedy ingredients--twisty plotting, profane wit, and memorable character performances. It doesn't add up to much here, but there's plenty of fun and laughs to be had in this brisk dark comedy. The cast is delightful, one and all. The ending is abrupt in the extreme, but this is entertaining as hell
What Just Happened?What Just Happened?
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
**** Smart, slick, and movie-savvy in the extreme. Director Barry Levinson and writer Art Linson give us a realistic Hollywood story. Robert De Niro plays his producer as unflappable, but shows what it takes to keep the panic at bay. Bruce Willis and Sean Penn amusingly riff on their superstar personas. It's not original or great, but this will have you chuckling at the reality of showbiz
TraitorTraitor
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $0.01
**** A couple of terrific performances, topical realism, palpable urgnecy, and fascinating bits on the inner structure of terrorist groups all make this an exciting and thought-provoking espionage tale. The direction is breathless, Don Cheadle and Guy Peacre are gripping, and Aly Khan is a nicely detestable villain. As spy thrillers go, you could do a lot worse than this
The Foot Fist WayThe Foot Fist Way
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.68
**** Danny McBride ('Pineapple Express' and 'Tropic Thunder') finally gets to prove his leading man capabilities with this superb indie comedy. It's a showcase for what McBride does best--the comically clueless goof. Rude, profane, and deadpan in the extreme, it has huge painful laughs and a redeemable heart. If you like your comedy laced with profanity and rudeness, this indie delight is for you
